The cost of energy is rising nationwide. There is more and more pressure on architects to design energy efficient buildings and on builders to use highly energy efficient products, both residentially and commercially...while keeping the costs down!

It is a challenge for everyone in the construction industry to understand and follow the energy efficiency guidelines that have been written into the latest International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). In some cases, when poor quality fenestration products are being used or specified, Energy Codes can limit the number of windows that can be installed in any given building.

The building "envelope" (overall energy performance of the building or the sum of its components) must meet strict minimal values in order for a construction permit to be granted.

One of the most straightforward ways to meet the energy codes as a builder or as an architect while still designing bright, airy buildings, is to use ENERGY STAR rated products.

Most VELUX skylights are ENERGY STAR rated in all 50 states, which means that they are certified to meet strict energy efficiency standards set by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). All ENERGY STAR fenestration products must have their U-value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient tested and certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) in order to receive ENERGY STAR rating.

By specifying or using ENERGY STAR rated products, architects and builders can use more windows, bring more daylight inside and design more attractive buildings while still meeting the local energy codes.
