Indoor climate and low energy consumption

VELUX develops products that help create a sound and healthy indoor climate and low energy consumption. The sharpened focus on climate change and energy supply reliability means more stringent demands for new buildings. With demonstration projects such as SOLTAG and Atika, VELUX is trying to show how low-energy buildings of the future, with good daylight conditions, can be developed and designed.

VELUX wants to see more widespread use of passive energy systems to reduce buildings' energy consumption. These systems exploit passive solar energy with windows, prioritise natural ventilation and use sunscreening products to reduce the need for active cooling.

VELUX is equally committed to developing products which reduce energy consumption in buildings. Examples include the GGL 3064 roof window (for “passive house”) and the 24 mm low energy window pane.

Solar energy
The harnessing of solar energy also features increasingly in our product development. This is the case with the solar-powered SSL roller shutters which, via solar collectors in the top of the frame, convert solar energy into electrical energy and hence save mains energy.

VELUX solar panels also harness solar energy and are capable of supplying up to 60-70% of the energy required by a household for heating water.

First solution in lead-free flashings
In 1997, five years before the use of lead was banned in Denmark, VELUX introduced the first solution in lead-free flashing for profiled roofing materials. In 2003, this solution was followed up by an optimised product, the so-called Sandwich+ construction, which was introduced to the majority of our markets in 2004. In 2007, this has enabled VELUX to reduce the use of lead by 87% in relation to 2003.
