Lancaster, CA
Architect: J. Staff Architect
General Contractor: LAS Design & Development
Products used: Electric Venting Skylights
This was a run-of the-mill suburban tract home built in 1974 but went through a complete remodel and the addition of 100 square feet to an existing 1,796 square feet. Priority was placed on opening up the interior of the house, which had too many rooms and not enough natural light within a claustrophobic floor plan.
The architect incorporated skylights to add more natural light and to provide the residents with a relaxing view of the day and night desert skies. The remote controlled skylights have the advantage of increasing energy efficiency by helping to release hot and humid air from the bathrooms and the kitchen.
To make up for the lack of a kitchen window and provide task lighting during the day, the electric venting skylight in the kitchen was placed squarely over the new work island.
