Quick and Easy Tips That Save:
- Invest in products that meet ENERGY STAR® approval guidelines
- Change or clean A/C and furnace filters once a month.
- Add an insulating blanket to your water heater.
- Use kitchen, bath and other ventilating fans wisely because they exhaust conditioned air.
- Adjust the temperature setting on your water heater to no more than 140ºF.
- Place lamps or TV sets away from thermostats because the heat they produce can affect proper operation of your heating and cooling system.
- Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioner units - but not to block air flow.
- Wash clothes in cold water, not hot water.
Do-It-Yourself Jobs:
- Replace plastic skylights with ENERGY STAR® approved FCM™ Skylights that have tempered and airtight glass and are specially formulated with Low-E glass coating for heat gain and fade protection.
- Install weather stripping around exterior doors and along the threshold to prevent energy loss. Large gaps around doorframes and the threshold allow conditioned air to escape.
- Add insulated or storm windows and doors to reduce unwanted heat loss.
- Install low-flow showerheads and faucets to drastically reduce hot water expenses.
- Repair leaky faucets or showerheads.
- Install an ENERGY STAR® water heater for great savings.
- Install a programmable thermostat. If you have a heat pump, select a model designed for heat pumps.
- Install dimmer switches to reduce the light level in a room by 10% and double the life of light bulbs.
- Purchase an energy-efficient washer and save up to 7,000 gallons of water per year along with the energy it takes to heat the water.
- Insulate raised floors above air conditioned spaces to an R-value of 19.
- Insulate the ceiling to a value of R-38 and save on heating and cooling costs.
