The DeWitt kitchen addition modernized a kitchen that had not been updated since the house was built in the 1940's. The existing kitchen was 100 square feet, which made preparing a simple meal challenging at best, and did not suit the lifestyle of the family, as they have a large extended family and many friends whom they enjoy gathering with and entertaining.

The DeWitt kitchen addition modernized a kitchen that had not been updated since the house was built in the 1940's. The existing kitchen was 100 square feet, which made preparing a simple meal challenging at best, and did not suit the lifestyle of the family, as they have a large extended family and many friends whom they enjoy gathering with and entertaining.

The remodeled kitchen is essentially triple the size of the original kitchen, with the addition of 225 sq ft of space. An abundance of cabinets were added to provide new storage space, but they left no area for windows. To overcome this dilemma, two VELUX venting skylights were used on this southward facing addition, while enhancing the modern look of the new kitchen space. The ceiling between the skylights was a cathedral ceiling with a ceiling fan centered between the two units.
