Architect: Juster Pope Frazier, L.L.P. – Shelburne Falls, MA
General Contractor: D.A. Sullivan – Northhampton, MA
Products: 90 fixed skylights

The dining commons at Westfield State College is adjacent to three awkward and dissimilar structures—two residential halls and a maintenance structure. To bring the varied buildings together and to relate the dining facility to the new college green which adjoins its fourth side, architects Juster Pope Frazier developed a staggered building plan.

This design identifies varied and interesting spaces within the large dining area. A ridged roof with welded pipe trusses is filled with skylights along its spine. This ridge helps the building relate successfully to its taller neighbors, and the matching rows of VELUX skylights identify a lively, interior space washed in daylight.

The walls of windows frame views of the campus. Light from these windows, together with light from the skylights above, add a sense of warmth and softness to the hard-surfaced interiors.
