The Solstice Institute in Boulder, Colorado had decided to contact a local architect to design and construct some renovations. The Institute leases space to groups giving workshops with a spiritual, ecological or creative focus. Participants enter the building through a dark, narrow hallway that opens to a slightly larger space, with the door to a large meeting space on either side.

It was agreed that this waiting room would feel more enlightened with the addition of VELUX skylights. The architect suggested the use of an ancient design philosophy known as the “phi” or “golden” ratio which is found in almost everything natural. Using this technique helped decide the proportions of the skylights to the ceiling.

The low ceiling of the room was knocked out to install a roof box three feet above it, and the new upper walls from the skylight box down to the edge of the walls were sloped to where the ceiling used to be. The engineering of the older building prevented the roof rafters from being taken out, but peering through the rafters seems to add an additional sense of depth.

The result is a difference in feel that no photo can capture. The sunlight that comes through the windows energizes those sitting or standing below and provides an uplifting sense of well being. The space provides such a warm and lovely feel that people now linger there.
